Here at Wholesale LED Lights, we think LED strip lights are absolutely brilliant. Weve been trying to wrack our brains to think of the 5 best things about them. The problem isnt that there arent enough but rather that there are so many good things about them!
However, after much deliberation and some input from the staff here at Head Office, we managed to get a list together. So, in no particular order here are the 5 best things about LED strip lights.
Being flexible, LED strip lights can be applied on uneven surfaces and taken round corner. This is where their other name LED tape comes from, as it is just as flexible as a piece of tape.
Theyre so flexible in fact, that they will still shine at 100% brightness even when it is bent back on itself with no damage done to the strip or lights themselves.
So you have the freedom to use it round walls, on the back of your TV, or anywhere else that might have otherwise been awkward to put lights on.
Our LED strip lights arent just limited to a single colour this is a massive advantage of using LEDs generally, as they can emit different colours without the need for any kind of filter.
Take our RGB colour changing LED strip lights for example they give you the choice of up to 16 different colours, including white.
Going even further is our LED pixel tape, which can output literally thousands of colours. Its so impressive, that Samsung used our very own pixel tape at the launch of their Galaxy Tablet and Gear products in London back in . Check out the video below!
All LED strip lights can be cut at designated points along the tape, allowing you to have the exact amount you need to run along your shelf, kitchen cabinet or ceiling trough.
The intervals at which our tape can be cut are as follows:
This doesnt apply to all our strip lights though our RGBW tape has 60 LEDs per metre but can only be cut every 10cm because of the arrangement of the LEDs themselves. Dont forget that these cutting lengths are doubled for 24V tape too.
Its definitely worth knowing that we offer a free cutting and soldering service on up to 5 cuts, saving you the hassle of having to do it yourself!
As if LED strip lights werent flexible enough both literally and figuratively using them outside is also an option because of the range of IP ratings we offer, protecting them from dust and water.
IP ratings can be confusing to understand if you dont know what the numbers and letters mean. IP stands for Ingress Protection, and is usually followed by 2 numbers. These digits indicate how well something protects against foreign objects and moisture respectively.
The table below outlines some of the main IP ratings that you can have on your LED strip lights.
IP Rating Protection against foreign bodies Protection against moisture IP20 Protected against objects larger than 50mm No protection IP44 Protected against objects larger than 1mm Splash proof IP65 Completely dust tight Light jets of water IP67 Completely dust tight Submergible at depths up to 1m for up to 30 minutes IP68 Completely dust tight Fully submergibleWe can also put IP68 nano protection too. This differs from other kinds of protection as it doesnt make your strips any bigger physically instead using silicon coating to provide the cover.
What this means is that you can still use any of our aluminium profiles to house your LED tape, which can help extend the lifespan of your strip lights by up to 50%.
All our LED strip lights come with commercial grade 3M adhesive on the back, allowing you to stick them down to pretty much any surface no need for any brackets or screws!
The adhesive is really strong, though before sticking anything down we cant guarantee that it will stick to absolutely every surface, so please ensure the place where you want to stick them down is clean of any dust or grease prior to application.
Of course, this list is by no means comprehensive as we were forced to omit many other features such as the long lifespan, energy efficiency and safety aspects. Despite this, I think youll agree with us that LED strip lights are pretty awesome.
Have you ever bought LED tape from us? If so, what do you think is the best thing about them? Let us know in the comments below, write on our Facebook wall (search Wholesale LED Lights), or tweet us at @WLEDLightsUK.
LED strip lights are relatively new in comparison with traditionally-used sources of illumination. In fact, theyre a completely new innovation, giving an amazing range of lighting opportunities that neither incandescent nor fluorescent lights could ever hope to achieve.
Thats because of their design, which has flexibility and versatility literally built in. The massive range of different types of LED strip lights available serves only to add to their attractiveness for potential buyers.
Typically sold by the metre, theyre flexible strips of light-emitting diodes, operating at 12-volts. Their innate flexibility is derived from the fact that they can be cut to almost any length, making them much more adaptable than any other form of lighting.
Theyre also incredibly cost-effective as youll discover once youve fitted yours. They have an unbelievably long life span and cost just a tiny fraction to power in comparison with both their incandescent and fluorescent counterparts, and there's a huge variety to choose from.
Theres the Single Colour LED Strip Light. Available in both 12-volts and 24-volts, theyre non-addressable, which means theyre the simplest form of strip light, not able to be programmed. Theyre perfect for providing bright, general illumination to fixed locations.
Most often, theyre to be found installed under cabinets or tables to provide a nice recessed glow, or as a source of indirect lighting for home theatre setups or display cases. Theyre relatively inexpensive, and theyre available in a choice of light intensities and in many colours, to include warm white (K), cool white (K) and daylight white (K) colour temperatures.
These latter colour temperature options means LED strip lights can be used to augment a rooms ambience, tailoring the lighting mood to your own, individual specifications. Take a look at this short video and see just how this can be achieved:
On the next step on the evolutionary strip light ladder are the dual colour LED strip lights, which incorporate sequenced warm and cool white diodes, enabling you to alter the intensity of each colour to achieve a wide range of temperatures from K up to K. In order to accomplish this great effect, youll need to purchase the Dual Colour Touch Controller.
As with all varieties of LED strip light, the dual colour variety has a life-expectancy that will astound you. Indeed, such is the longevity of the entire range of these amazing strips of light, that its likely theyll still be going strong in over 17 years time. This puts both incandescent and fluorescent lights in the shade, as neither of them can compete with the 50,000 hour life-span of LEDs.
To ensure that your LED strip light achieves its full life-expectancy, youll want to employ the services of an Aluminium LED Profile. Theyll not only safeguard the strip against degradation caused by an inefficient heat dispersal system, theyll also make your installation look great. Sure, theres 3M adhesive backing on the reverse of every LED light strip, but for a truly stable fixture with an air of permanence, profiles are the only way to go.
Theyll also allow you to optimise the light dispersal of your LED strip, ensuring its beam angle is realised to full effect, and the choice of diffusers will help you find the perfect quality of light for your particular environment.
As with the aforementioned single colour varieties, the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) LED strip lights are also available in either a 12-volt or a 24-volt option and your choice will be dependent upon the intensity of light you require.
Theres a whole swathe of RGB LED Controllers from which to choose, and each will give you the ability to create a full colour spectrum, thanks to the colour-changing combination of the three colours mixed with white.
Controllers such as the RGB Colour Touch Remote make this possible with a colour wheel, whereas the 20 Key RF RGB Controller places the enormous colour palate and innumerable modes at your disposal via a radio-frequency key pad.
LED strip lights of all descriptions are a wonderful way to illuminate your home or business, both indoors and out. This is due to the different categories of Ingress Protection with which theyre endowed.
Obviously, indoor installations will require a great deal less protection, because the strip is unlikely to become wet in your living space or bedroom. For garden or even swimming pool illumination, a higher level of protection is advisable.
This table should give you all the information you need to know about the most suitable location for each ingress protection rating.

IP RatingUsage GuideIP20This level is protection from solid objects larger than 12mm, but isnt protected at all from water. Its mainly used under plinths and for cabinet lighting, as well as for general backlighting.IP44IP44-rated LED strip light offers complete protection against solid objects larger than 1mm and from light splashes of water. It can be used for all indoor applications and also in certain outdoor applications, depending on the level of moisture.IP65A totally splash-proof LED strip, this is best suited to bathroom installations in which it could be exposed to water and steam. Strip with this level of protection can also be used in the kitchen and for outdoor applications such as patio and garden illumination.IP67This is completely dust-tight strip that is also able to be fully immersed in 1 metre of water for up to 30 minutes. It makes it the ideal level of protection for all outdoor applications.IP68/IP68 NanoThis is generally used for swimming pool installations, as well as ponds and large fish-tanks. Its the ideal protection should you wish to immerse your LED strip in water thats up to 1.5 metres deep.Fully controllable when used in conjunction with the RGBW LED Remote, the RGBW variety of strip light can create similar effects to that of the RGB, only with the added cool or warm white options, both of which will enable you to generate a much more extensive range of colours.
The absolutely stunning RGB Pixel Tapes mind-boggling features might be best explained by watching this short video:
For your convenience, the entire collection of LED strip lights is obtainable in Kit form. In lengths of 1-metre all the way up to 5-metres, each comes complete with a compatible plug and play power source, and the controllable varieties include the appropriate remote.
As if the massive variety in which LED strip lights are available werent enough, they all share a number of other fabulous attributes, not least of which is their ability to be customised to suit your space.
They can be cut at pre-marked intervals along their length, using just a pair of normal scissors, however, if you dont fancy doing the job yourself, remember that Wholesale LED Lights is the only LED lighting company in the whole of the UK to offer a free, bespoke cutting and soldering service, so why not take full advantage of that?
Possibly the most compelling reason to choose LED strip lights to illuminate your home or business is that theyre incredibly energy-efficient. This is especially noticeable in comparison with their traditional forebears.
Indeed, LED tapes and LED lights in general, require up to 90% less electricity to power them than both incandescent and fluorescent lights and bulbs.
The Single Colour LED Strip Lights (60 x SMD) for example, require just 4.8 watts of electricity to generate the same 400 lumens as a 50 watt traditional bulb. Youll definitely notice the difference in your energy expenditure when the time comes for your next electricity bill, given that theyll be using less than 10% of the power of your existing light sources.
All-in-all, LED strips offer you not only the greatest number of options, but also cost-effectiveness and energy-efficiency thats second to none.
