WPC vinyl flooring typically consists of four layers:

Next, we will explore the advantages of WPC vinyl plank flooring and why its becoming a favorite among homeowners and businesses alike.
One of the standout benefits of WPC vinyl plank flooring is its waterproof nature. Unlike traditional wood or laminate flooring, WPC can handle spills and moisture without warping, swelling, or peeling. This makes it an ideal choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. In fact, we put WPC flooring to the test by soaking it in red wine for 24 hours, and it came out unscathed. This isnt just marketing talk; its a proven fact.
WPC flooring is designed to withstand daily wear and tear. Its thick wear layer acts as a bodyguard, protecting the floor from scratches, dents, and stains. This makes it a great option for homes with pets and children. The wear layers thickness directly correlates with its durability, so the thicker the wear layer, the more protection your floor gets.
Installing WPC vinyl plank flooring is a breeze, even for DIY enthusiasts. The planks come with an interlocking system that allows them to float over most existing subfloors. This means you can install WPC over wood, tile, or concrete without extensive prep work. The ease of installation saves both time and money, making it a cost-effective choice for many homeowners.
The WPC core is not just waterproof; its also slightly softer than other materials. This provides a more comfortable underfoot experience, making it ideal for areas where youll be standing for long periods, like kitchens. The attached underlayment also adds a layer of cushioning, enhancing comfort even further.
WPC vinyl plank flooring also excels in soundproofing. The multi-layer construction helps to dampen noise, making it a great option for multi-story homes or apartments. The attached underlayment further reduces sound, ensuring a quieter, more peaceful living environment.
Next, we will delve into the installation and maintenance of WPC vinyl plank flooring to help you understand how to keep your new floors looking great for years to come.

Steps to Install:
Pro Tip: Always check the manufacturers instructions for specific guidelines tailored to your WPC flooring product.
Maintaining WPC vinyl plank flooring is straightforward. Its designed to be low-maintenance, but a few simple practices can keep it looking new for years.
Daily Care:
Sweep or Vacuum: Regularly remove dirt and debris using a broom or a vacuum with a soft-bristle attachment.
Damp Mop: Use a damp mop with a mild detergent for routine cleaning. Avoid using a wet mop to prevent water from seeping into the seams.
Avoid:
Harsh Chemicals: Stay away from abrasive cleaners or bleach.
Steam Mops: The heat can damage the wear layer.
Rubber Mats: They can cause discoloration due to chemical reactions.
Pro Tip: Place doormats at entrances to reduce the amount of dirt and moisture tracked onto your floors.
WPC vinyl plank flooring is built to last. Its multi-layer construction includes a thick wear layer that protects against dents, scratches, and everyday wear and tear. This makes it an excellent choice for high-traffic areas in both residential and commercial settings.
Durability Highlights:
Wear Layer: Acts as a bodyguard, protecting against dents and scratches. The thicker the wear layer, the more durable the floor.
Waterproof Core: Prevents swelling, rippling, and peeling, even when exposed to water for extended periods.
UV Resistance: While not completely immune to fading, WPC flooring holds up better against sunlight compared to other flooring types.
Pro Tip: For areas with heavy furniture, consider using wide-bearing, non-staining floor protectors to prevent dents.
Next, we will compare WPC vinyl plank flooring to other popular flooring types to help you make an informed decision.
Durability: SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) flooring has a denser core due to its limestone content, making it more resistant to dents and scratches. WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) flooring, while also durable, is slightly less dense and can dent under extreme pressure.
Flexibility: WPC flooring is more flexible than SPC, making it better suited for subfloors that are not perfectly even. SPCs rigidity can cause issues if the subfloor is slightly uneven.
Comfort: WPC flooring contains a foaming agent in its core, providing a softer and more cushioned feel underfoot. SPC flooring is more rigid and less comfortable to walk on for extended periods.
Aesthetic Appeal: Both WPC and SPC offer realistic wood and stone visuals. However, WPC tends to have more detailed and high-quality prints, giving it a slight edge in aesthetic appeal.
Water Resistance: Both WPC and SPC are highly water-resistant, but WPC has a slight advantage due to its foam core, which prevents swelling even when exposed to water.
Cost Effectiveness: SPC flooring is generally more affordable than WPC. However, the comfort and flexibility of WPC can justify the higher price for many homeowners.
Durability: Laminate flooring is durable but can be prone to water damage. WPC flooring, on the other hand, is 100% waterproof and can withstand spills and moisture without issue.
Visual Appeal: Both WPC and laminate can mimic the look of natural wood and stone. However, WPC often offers more realistic visuals due to advanced printing technologies.
Cost Effectiveness: Laminate is typically less expensive than WPC. However, the added benefits of WPC, such as water resistance and durability, can make it a more cost-effective choice in the long run.
Maintenance: WPC flooring requires less maintenance than laminate. Laminate can swell and warp when exposed to water, necessitating more frequent repairs and replacements.
Installation: Both WPC and laminate are DIY-friendly with easy click-lock systems. However, WPCs flexibility makes it easier to install over imperfect subfloors.
Durability: Traditional hardwood is prone to scratches, dents, and water damage. WPC flooring is more resistant to these issues, making it a more durable option.
Maintenance: Hardwood flooring requires regular maintenance, including refinishing and resealing. WPC flooring is low-maintenance, needing only regular sweeping and occasional mopping.
Installation: Hardwood installation is labor-intensive and often requires professional help. WPC flooring features an interlocking system that makes it easy for DIY installation.
Cost: Hardwood is significantly more expensive than WPC. According to Forbes, WPC offers a similar aesthetic at a fraction of the cost.
Water Resistance: Hardwood is susceptible to water damage, while WPC is 100% waterproof, making it a better choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements.
Aesthetic Appeal: While nothing can completely replicate the natural beauty of hardwood, WPC comes very close with its high-quality prints and textures.

Flooring dealers are always looking for the next big thing, the game-changing product that can translate to bigger sales and profits. That is the promise WPCwood plastic/ polymer compositeholds.
As the WPC category emerges, specialty dealers are faced with a few challenges, from explaining the features and benefits of the new category to customers to effectively merchandising this classification of product.
For those just getting into the category, or for those looking to learn more, here are five questions about WPC and how to answer them:
The w stands for wood, but the fact is the majority of WPC-type products entering the market today do not contain wood. WPC is a composite material made of thermoplastics, calcium carbonate and wood flour. Extruded as a core material, it is marketed as being waterproof, rigid and dimensionally stablethereby overcoming various traditional engineered wood disadvantages while still offering wood-look visuals. In an effort to differentiate their products, suppliers are branding their WPC offerings with names such as enhanced vinyl plank, engineered vinyl plank (or EVP flooring) and waterproof vinyl flooring.
Shaw Floors, for example, brands its Floorté as enhanced vinyl plank with an improved formulation that gives it greater density than WPC. Manningtons new Adura Max is an enhanced vinyl plank the company is touting as the quietest product on the market.
The main differences are that WPC flooring is waterproof and can go over most subfloors without much preparation. Traditional vinyl floors are flexible and any unevenness in the subfloor will transfer through the surface. Compared to traditional glue-down LVT or solid-locking LVT, WPC products have a distinct advantage because the rigid core hides subfloor imperfections. In addition, the rigid core allows for longer and wider formats. With WPC, it is not necessary to worry about the preparation LVT would require for use over cracks and divots in concrete or wooden subfloors.
The big advantage for WPC over laminate is that it is waterproof and suitable for environments in which laminate shouldnt normally be usedtypically bathrooms and basements that have potential moisture infiltration. In addition, WPC products can be installed in large rooms without an expansion gap every 30 feet, which is a requirement for laminate floors. The vinyl wear layer of WPC provides cushion and comfort and also absorbs the impact sound to make it a quiet floor. WPC is also suitable for large open areas (basements and Main Street commercial areas) because it doesnt need expansion moldings.
Most manufacturers regard WPC as a subcategory of LVT. As such, it is likely to be displayed among other resilient and/or LVT products. Some retailers have WPC displayed between laminate and LVT or vinyl since it is the ultimate crossover category.
Jim Mudd, president of Sam Kinnairds Flooring in Louisville, Ky., merchandises WPC in the laminate section. I consider WPC laminate even though I dont think it matters, he said. All I care about is that the product is waterproof and quiet [underfoot].
Is WPC a fad or the next big thing in flooring? No one can know for sure, but indications are this product offers great potential. It absolutely can become the dominant player, said Eric Mondragon, hard surface buyer for R.C. Willey Home Furnishings, with 13 locations in four Western states. WPC is what the LVT category has evolved to, although I still see the need for traditional dry-back LVT for multi-family and commercial segments of the market.
USFloors helped usher in the WPC era with the launch of COREtec three Surfaces ago. In , the company received a patent that covers all engineered flooring products with a WPC core and veneer top layer with or without an attached backing. Noting that WPC is still at the early stages of its lifecycle and expansion, Piet Dossche, CEO of USFloors, predicted WPC will forever change the landscape of LVT and several other flooring categories. Specfically, he suggested some categories may even need to be reinvented.
That change could be happening soon. Jeff Striegel, president of Elias Wilf, a Top 20 distributor based in Owings Mills, Md., expects WPC to be the talk of Surfaces with as many as 40 introductions. Any time you have a product that solves a problem it seems to do well, he said. One of the issues people have with LVT is that there is some telegraphing and, therefore, are limitations with what you can put LVT over. That is not the case with WPC. It is clearly a trend that is on the move.
