A spillway is a structure used to dispose off the surplus amount of water from a reservoir or dam when it has reached up to its limit.
A chute spillway is a type of spillway that disposes off excess water from upstream through a steeply sloped open channel to the downstream. It is typically built at one end of the dam or separately away from the dam in a natural saddle in a river bank.
A spillway can be constructed within the dam's body, at the dam's end, or totally separate from the dam as an independent structure.
When the water level rises beyond the limit of the dams or the reservoirs, it flows through the spillways in order to prevent the flooding and overloading condition upon the dam or reservoir due to surplus water. It prevents the overtopping of the dams.
Energy dissipators are used to dissipate the energy of the flowing water from the spillways. It prevents the bed from scouring due to surplus energy of the flowing water.
