6 Questions Before Choosing Screens - Phifer

Without a doubt, choosing what type of screen to use on your porch or patio can be confusing! However, getting answers to a few questions during your project planning phase can certainly simplify your choices.

1) What is your budget?

Whether the project is a new build or a repair/rescreening job, knowing how much you plan to spend can determine what type of material to use. For example, a 100 foot roll of 48” wide screen can range from $75 for standard fiberglass to $250 for TuffScreen to $300 for a pet resistant or sun shading product such as PetScreen® or SunTex®. A premium product such as Bronze or Stainless Steel wire mesh could range from $700 to $1,000 per roll.

2) Will you be hiring a contractor or is this a DIY project?

Keep in mind that a reputable installer/contractor will be more expensive than DIY but, depending on the complexity of the job, hiring one may be the better option. They will likely be able to advise you on other factors that you may have not considered such as electrical needs, fixtures, frame system types, etc. If you have the skills to tackle it as a DIY project, great!

3) What are the highest priority features you want in the porch or patio screen material?

Your answers to our screening quiz will narrow down your options quickly. For example, if you want the absolute best visibility in a product such as UltraVue2, keep in mind that it won’t hold up well to small children or pets pushing or scratching on it. In contrast, if you want a sun blocking or daytime privacy screen such as SunTex 80, it will be woven with larger diameter yarns in a tighter mesh pattern which will diminish air flow and visibility when compared to high visibility screens.

4) What method will be used to install the screening to your structure?

There are several ways to put screening on a porch or patio. These would include securing into the groove of a frame with spline, stapling to a wood structure and covering with furring trim or using a screen porch system such as ScreenEze. Depending on your chosen method, you may be limited on which screening products will perform best.

5) Where is the structure located and what maintenance will be needed?

If your porch or patio is difficult to access on a second level or elevated 15-20’ from the ground, you may want to consider installing a more durable screening product such as aluminum, bronze or stainless steel wire mesh. Under normal conditions, these products can last for decades, will keep you off ladders, and won’t need replacing as often as standard fiberglass or polyester screens. An occasional gentle brushing with soapy water solution followed by rinsing with a standard water hose is all that is needed to maintain them.
